Proof of Concept is a retrospective exhibition catalogue of the media works of Armando Rascón. Tracing the development from early Super 8 film to the advent of activist media and ephemeral works that have defined his practice from 1976 to 2026, the book explores the artist’s range of subject matter from California’s postcolonial history to queer activism with earlier backdrops of experimental sound works dating to the late Seventies and Eighties. I was commissioned to bring clarity to the project and develop a design direction to incorporate long form essay text (English and Spanish), QR media codes, multiple artwork plates, mixed media, extended captions and chapter openers, which feature bold gothic typography associated with Mexican and Mexican-American street gangs, often a subject of Rascón's work.
